Debt Collectors Will Pay More Than $1 Million to Settle FTC Charges

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

For Release: 03/03/2010
Federal Trade commission

http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2010/03/creditcollect.shtm

Credit Bureau Collection Services, and two of its officers, Larry Ebert and Brian Striker violated the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

They continually ignored rules to update the Credit Reporting Agency to update their account listings as being under dispute by the consumer.

Even when the consumers notified them that a debt was paid off, or that the debt did not belong to them in the first place.

The Collection Agency would continue to insist that the debt was owed, and insist that they still had to pay the debt.

FTC has Barred the defendants from any further violations.

When a consumer disputes, the Collection Agency is obligated to investigate or close the account, and to cease collection efforts.

They can not sell the debt, they have to return it back to the original creditor.
If the account did not belong to the consumer, the Collection Agency is obligated to delete it from the consumer credit report.

If the debt is paid already then the Collection Agency is obligated to update the Credit Reporting Agency to show the account paid/zero balance.

Protect Your Credit Information with These Tips

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Not necessarily the main reason, but one of the reasons that many people have less than perfect credit is because of inaccurate information found on their credit report. This could have been a mix-up or it could mean that you are a victim of identity theft. Whatever the case may be, it is important to know how to protect your credit score so learn a few tips that will help keep you on top of your credit file.

Check your credit report annually – it’s free, so there really is no reason not to do this.

Study your credit card statements as well as your bank statements when they become available online or when you get them in the mail. Pay very close attention to the charges made. If you find a charge that you did not make, call your banking institution or credit card company immediately and close the account instantly.

If you find that your purse or wallet has been stolen, which contained credit cards, report them stolen immediately to your credit card company so they can either put a hold on your account or close it. File a police report as well. This police report can be sent to your credit card company for proof of the stolen items and they can close your account immediately (just in case they wouldn’t without this, plus it’s something good to have on file in case anything ever comes up about the situation).

To try to keep your credit cards and other information safe, do not give out your personal or financial information to people you do not know and to those that you are unsure of their true credibility.

You should also keep your belongings with you – never leave your wallet or purse in your vehicle when you are not in it. Don’t leave it in your car while you run inside the store to pay for gas – it only takes a few seconds for an identity to be stolen!
